How do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are titanium posts, which are placed in your jawbone to act as a replacement root structure for missing teeth. Your bone will bond with the implant, creating a strong foundation for an implant crown (a replacement tooth). If there is not enough bone to support the implant placement, a bone graft may be placed and heal prior to implant placement to provide a solid foundation.

Once your implant has completely integrated with your bone, an implant crown can be fabricated by your restorative dentist and secured to the dental implant for a natural looking and durable tooth.

Advantages of Dental Implants

• Accepted by dental professionals for over 40 years as an effective and reliable method for missing tooth replacement.
• Dental implants substitute for the roots of lost teeth and act as sturdy anchors for replacement teeth like crowns, bridges and dentures.
• They preserve jawbone structure and prevent further bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing.
• Dental implants eliminate the need to sacrifice healthy surrounding teeth in order to replace missing teeth.
• Implants can eliminate the need for removable dentures or “partials,” which can be inconvenient, uncomfortable and embarrassing.
• Dental implants can last for many years with proper care and good oral hygiene.

Single vs. Multiple Implants Explained

A single implant crown is used to replace one missing tooth and each replacement implant crown attaches to its own implant.

An implant bridge can replace one or more teeth by using two or more dental implants, which act as durable foundation for multiple implant crowns.

A fixed overdenture replaces all the teeth and is anchored into your upper or lower jaw using dental implants.

A Collaborative Dental Team

The best dental implant results come from a coordinated dental team effort between a skilled Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, like Dr. Naples and a Restorative Dentist.

An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is the combination of general dentist and medical doctor. At the completion of their training an Oral Surgeon will have received an additional 4 – 6 years of surgical training, including extensive dental implant placement experience after completing their Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.

A Restorative Dentist who has completed their Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree will be familiar with dental implant restorations. A skilled Restorative Dentist will be a conscientious devotee to the field of dentistry by seeking out continuing education which supports and furthers their knowledge received in dental school.

Dr. Naples and your Restorative Dentist will coordinate individualized treatment for you during every step of the implant process.
