Facial Trauma Reconstruction

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specially trained in treating and repairing facial trauma. Facial trauma includes fractures of the upper and lower jaws, orbits surrounding the eyes, and facial lacerations. Accidents resulting from falls, automobile crashes and violence are the most common causes of facial trauma. Younger children often experience facial trauma as a result of bicycle, skateboard or sports injuries.

No facial injury should be taken lightly. There are serious health and dental concerns which can result from minor facial trauma, such as respiratory or breathing issues, speech and swallowing. Typically extensive maxillofacial fractures are accompanied by other serious medical problems. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon will coordinate care with other medical specialists to insure that best overall care and results for the patient.

Facial injuries left untreated can lead to the following long term problems.

  • Loss of teeth functionality
  • Smile aesthetics
  • Poor teeth alignment or jaw irregularities
  • Facial Aesthetics
